Welcome to Mrs. Korlann's second grade web page. This is a very important time in your child’s education as it provides a foundation for the development of skills and concepts that promote life-long learning. The general information included on this page will acquaint you with the basic subjects the children will study this year.
One curriculum area I will emphasize is math and the children will be using the Everyday Mathematics program. This program features: a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations, an on-going practice of basic skills, as well as frequent revisiting of previously learned concepts. It also develops the following content: numeration, operations and computation, data and chance; geometry, measurement and reference frames; and functions, patterns, and algebra. The children will learn the basic addition and subtraction facts from 0 through 18 and apply them in other math activities. Extra practice at home will help your child accomplish this goal. Parents should help their child complete and return the math homework that is assigned. Parents should also watch for and check over their child’s weekly math papers. This will help them be aware of any areas with which they can help their child build the skills and concepts that are being taught.
Another area receiving a major emphasis will be reading/language arts. Many of the children’s lessons will be based on stories from their second grade Harcourt curriculum. Integrated with these stories will be a variety of leveled trade books and writers workshop activities. The children’s spelling lessons, which are also integrated into the program, will help build their sight vocabulary and will include phonics instruction. You can help your child reinforce the skills he/she is learning by having him/her practice reading at least 10 minutes every day, by completing reading and/or spelling homework, and by checking over your child’s writing assignments for mechanics and application of the tested spelling words.
Handwriting will involve reviewing letter shapes and writing neatly on all assignments. You can help by encouraging your child to print neatly on all of their homework.
Many science, health, social studies, technology, and art lessons will be integrated with the reading/language arts curriculum.
