Welcome
It is a pleasure to be your child’s 5th grade teacher this school year! We have many exciting things planned this year such as; Village Enterprise, Camp Auburn, DARE, Safety Patrol, ASB Officers and many more.
In class, we will focus our attention to 5th grade standards in Math, Writing, Language Arts, Science, and Reading. We will also be studying Colonial America and Health. We have a lot to accomplish this year and I have high expectations of ALL my students and know that they ALL can be successful meeting the 5th grade standards.

Classroom Guidelines
The past 3 days, your child and classmates have been working collaboratively to develop a set of core classroom rules that everyone agrees with. With that, we also discussed classroom consequences, what they should be, if they fail to follow the core guidelines. Please take a minute to review the attached guidelines with your child. These guidelines will be in your child’s folder all year. Rewards for students that meet these classroom expectations may

include praise, Caught Being good tickets, letters home, school recognition and free choice time. Consequences for choosing not to follow classroom guideline are: 1. Warning 2. Think Time 3. Lunch Detention 4. Meeting with Mr. Brown 5 Parent contact.

Our classroom is a safe and positive environment where child will feel welcome and safe to learn.

Homework and Homework Log

It is my belief that homework be used to supplement lessons taught each day in class. To that end,
homework may be assigned throughout the week. Every
student has a School Assignment Planner (blue) which homework will be added for each day. These are to be left in the folder for the entire year.  Late homework will not be accepted unless it is a long term assignment or student was absent. If there is no homework listed for the day, your child can read for 20 minutes and/or practice their spelling words. You can check the homework log each day to see if homework has been assigned. The homework log also has a place for yo0ur signature to verify that your child is showing you his/her homework log. This will be done each Friday.

Specialist Schedule
Below is the specialist schedule. Each day, specialist will start at 2:25 -3:10
Monday – Music
Tuesday – PE
Wednesday – Technology
Thursday – Library
Friday – PE

Portable #3

Our classroom does not have running water inside so I encourage all students to bring re-usable water containers/bottled water to class so they can stay hydrated and healthy. No Gatorade or Propel please. Also think about sending small packages of hand wipes so they can keep their desk surface clean.

Volunteers

For those who are interested, I have attached a volunteer sign up sheet. Please indicate what you would be interested in doing: popcorn (fundraiser for camp), field trips, at-home work or in the classroom.

5th Grade Fundraising

Fifth grade will be hosting several fundraising events throughout the year. The money raised during these events is used to reduce the cost of Camp Auburn for each student. Types of fundraisers that we may do are selling neon bracelets and cookie dough. We will let you know more as the year progresses.

Communication

I have an “open classroom” policy so if you have any questions regarding academics, student progress or behavior, feel free to visit (before or after school) or call. I can also be reached via email or website:

Each month, I will be sending home classroom newsletters similar to this one informing you of recent events and upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Michael Decker
