September 2008

Dear 1st Grade Parents,

I am so excited to be a part of your child’s 1st grade year! My name is Callie McCarthy and I am your student’s Learning Specialist.  This is my seventh year teaching and my third year here at Lakeland teaching half time.  Working as a half time learning specialist has allowed me to continue following my passion of teaching children while also enjoying staying home part time with my two year old son, Kaden and my one year old daughter, Madeline.  This year as the Learning Specialist my focus will be teaching your child math and music.  I come to your child’s classroom four days a week for 45 minutes each day.  The fifth day during this time will be their Library time with Mrs. Leaf.  Three of those days I will be teaching supplemental math lessons and on the fourth day I will be teaching music.  Due to the large number of students in our building, I do not have a classroom of my own.  However I do have a stylish cart that I will bring with me as I come to your child’s homeroom to teach each day.  I am very excited to be a part of your student’s learning this year.  I have some exciting things planned and cannot wait to begin teaching and enjoying your students.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 253-876-7711 ex. 1290 or cmccarthy@auburn.wednet.edu .

Classroom Rules and Expectations

  1. Be respectful
  2. Listen when others are talking
  3. Raise your hand to talk
  4. Follow directions
  5. Try your best

Because I am not teaching in my own classroom I have opted to follow your child’s home teacher’s classroom discipline plans.  Please refer to your child’s classroom teacher’s discipline policies if you have any questions.  I will be working directly with your child’s teacher and you if any problems occur that need to be solved.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns in this area.

Math

My role in teaching math this year will be in support of your child’s classroom teacher.  The classroom teacher will be teaching from the Everyday Math curriculum while I will be adding games, manipulatives, and lessons that will support and reinforce what is being taught by the classroom teacher.

Music

In music this year your students will be learning about rhythms, high and low pitches, dynamics, tempos, and note and rest values.  They will also experience a variety of music and movement along with exploring sounds of percussion instruments and rhythm sticks.  One of the most exciting parts of this year will be the chance for your students to participate in a 1st grade musical.  We will be performing the musical sometime in December.  More information will be coming on this as I solidify dates.  I will also be looking for parent volunteers to help with costuming and props as we get closer to this time.  (During the time we are working on the musical we will be having music two days a week.)
