Welcome to Mrs. Knapp and Mrs. Jeffreys' Second/Third Grade Combination Class!

About Mrs. Knapp and Mrs. Jeffreys:
Mrs. Knapp has taught both 5th grade and 3rd grade in the Auburn School District for the past six years.  She has been a member of the Lakeland Hills staff since 2006.  Mrs. Knapp lives in Puyallup with her husband, Tim, and daughter, Ava, who will be one in October.

Mrs. Jeffreys has taught 4th grade in the Auburn School District for the past five years.  She is excited to be joining the Lakeland Hills staff.  Mrs. Jeffreys lives in Puyallup with her husband, Brendan, who also teaches in the Auburn School District, and one-year-old son, Connor.

About our Job Share:
We are thrilled to be job sharing this year!  Mrs. Jeffreys will teach every Monday and Tuesday, and Mrs. Knapp will teach every Thursday and Friday.  We will alternate Wednesdays.  This arrangement allows us time to spend with our families while still doing the job we love... teaching kids!  We will work together to plan instruction and evaluate student progress.  Communication is very important to us, so please "cc" both of us when sending us an email.  Even on our days at home we will check our school email.

Accelerated Reader:  Accelerated Reader (or AR) at Lakeland Hills is a reading supplement used in grades 1 – 5.  AR is only one piece of our reading program, and it can significantly raise the reading levels of students who fully participate. Here are the basics of how it works:

·        Students are given a test to establish their independent reading levels (this will happen in the beginning of the year).

·        Students then read books within their reading level range.

·        After a student reads a book within their level, they can take a multiple-choice computerized test on the book. They receive points based on how well they do on the test. Students accumulate points toward their “AR goal”.

·        Not every book ever written has a test on the AR system; however, we do have tests for over 4,000 books. A complete list of AR books and tests is on the Lakeland Hills web site (www.auburn.wednet.edu/lakeland/).

·        Students must bring in their book and give us an oral summary of it to receive points after reading books for which Lakeland Hills currently does not own the computerized test.

Students are given time to read in class everyday. Students must also read outside of school in order to reach their goal. As part of their homework, students should read at home for a minimum of 15-20 minutes every night.  Children who read outside of school will show the greatest gains in their independent reading levels.

Behavior:  There are three main things that we expect from every student in our classroom.  We expect them to be Ready to Learn.  This means they have come to school prepared with the necessary materials and with their completed homework.  We also expect each child to be a Responsible Learner; which means that they will cooperate with their classmates, be respectful of others learning, and will participate and be attentive during class.  The final expectation we have is that they will Treat Others with Respect.  With these expectations in place, we will be able to build a nurturing and supportive learning community.

Organization:  We believe organization is an important skill that has to be learned.  It is a skill your child will need throughout his or her education and in life.  For this reason, we will spend time this year learning how to be successful in this area.

For second graders, we will use folders:  work folder (stays at school for all classwork the child is working on), and take home folder (goes to and from school).

For third graders, one tool of organization that we will learn to use is the notebook (binder).  Your child should have come to school with a 3-ring notebook and dividers.  During the first week of
school we will set up our notebooks together, and then throughout the year each child will use his or her notebook to store necessary papers and assignments.  We will provide a lot of guidance in how to use the notebook.
