Written Language -
Welcome back spelling! Spelling packets are back this week. Spelling sentences are required for homework and due on Friday along with the packet. Sentences must have a minimum of 6 words and no more than 4 sentences beginning with the word "I". This week we will also continue to work on writing eight sentence paragraphs.

Math: Students are going to continue to work on division skills. Those that continue to struggle with their multiplication facts should be studying at home. Dividing by a double digit will be introduced for those that are ready.

Resource Room
Written Language: This year in language arts students will be using the Step Up to Writing Curriculum to enhance their writing skills. We will begin by working on writing a Perfect Three Sentence Paragraph and build up to writing a solid eight sentence paragraph. This program uses a color coded system and will require that students have pink, green, and yellow highlighters.

On a daily basis students will be working on the following:

v     Fluency – Students are paired with a partner that is at the same reading level. Students read a passage for an entire week and graph their correct words per minute.

v     Editing – Editing sheets are given out on Monday. As a class we will work on the particular skills for that week. Students will work on capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling errors. On Thursday they are required to work independently and only this day is graded.

Math: In math students will begin with working on basic skills of addition and subtraction. Throughout the school year we will work on multiplication, long division, decimals, word problems, and fractions (adding/subtracting). It would be beneficial for students to continue to practice their basic multiplication facts at home throughout the school year.

On a daily basis we will be working on the following:

v     Timing: Students will take a timing daily starting with multiplication facts and moving to division. They will take a three minute practice timing and three minute test. In order to pass they will need to complete 80% of the facts.

v     Daily Word Problem: As a class we will work on a daily word problem using the S.O.L.V.E. method. As long as they are getting down the information it should be a free 25 points a week. When they are absent they are required to get the problem they missed done.

Reading: Students will be using the Corrective Reading Decoding Program. Students are grouped into reading groups based on their reading abilities. This program will work on building students decoding skills, comprehension, and fluency. Please encourage your student to read at home on a regular basis books that are in their level.
