Grade Syllabus for Geography and Ancient
Civilizations
Welcome to Willson’s 6th Grade
Social Studies Program! Students will investigate Ancient Cultures
with a geographical perspective. Reading and language skills will
be key elements to a successful course of study.
CONTENT: A Standards Based Outline
Through the semester course of
social studies students will encounter the five branches of social
studies content. If students meet standard (pass) they will:
Civics
·
Understand governments and political systems. (Egypt’s
monarchy vs. Greece’s democracy)
·
Understand international policy. (Silk Road, Alexander the
Great)
·
Understand civic involvement. (role of citizens in ancient
Greece)
Economics
·
Understand people make choices between wants and needs. (production
and distribution in Egypt and Mesopotamia)
·
Understand government role in the economy. (Sumerians made records
which led to cuneiform)
Geography
·
Understand the location, physical characteristics, cultural
characteristics and spatial patterns of places and regions on
earth’s surface. (construct & analyze maps, identify
locations, and analyze characteristics)
·
Understand human interaction with the environment. (Environment,
cultures, geographic factors cause movements)
History
·
Understand and analyze causal factors that shaped major events in
history (ancient cultures contribute to history)
·
Understand the there are multiple perspectives and interpretations
of historical events. (ancient cultures technology affects
history)
Social Studies Skills
·
Understand and apply reasoning skills to conduct research,
deliberate, from and evaluate positions through the process of
reading, writing, and communication. (CBA)
GRADING POLICY
Grades are determined by:
- Assignments and homework
(40%)
- Assessments and projects
(60%)
GRADING SCALE
A = 90% -
100%
B = 80% -
89%
C = 74% -
76%
D = 60% -
69%
F = 59% and below
HOMEWORK
Daily Geography assignments will
be handed out on Mondays (or the first day of the week) and
collected Fridays.
Other homework for projects or
research will be assigned as it applies to the appropriate
content.
JOURNALS
Journals will be kept in class as
a record of students learning.
