greer.jpgWelcome to Terminal Park P.E.

Hello.  My name is Gary Greer, and I am the Physical Education Specialist here at Terminal Park Elementary.  The 2009-10 school year will be my tenth year working in the Auburn School District.  I love my job, and can't think of any career that I would enjoy more.  I have always had a passion for sports and games, and I live a very active lifestyle.  I enjoy sports of all kinds, but some of my favorites are golf, volleyball (I actually played in the Seaside Oregon beach volleyball tournament this summer), table tennis (ping pong), tennis, racquetball, basketball, and snowboarding.  In fact, in the winter, I teach snowboarding lessons at Snoqualmie Pass on the weekends.

There are a few other things that I would like to share about myself.  First, I'm a local guy...born at Auburn General Hospital.   I have two sisters, one older and one younger.  Since I was the middle child, I had to learn to share and get along, skills that have served me well as I became an adult, and became a teacher.  I went to school in the Federal Way School District.  After graduating from Thomas Jefferson H.S., I went on to get my teaching degree from Western Washington University.

One more personal note, this has been a great year for me, since I got married last September...I am coming up on my 1st anniversary on September 27th!  I guess I can still be considered in that newly-wed category.  My wife, Lynda, is the band and orchestra director at Enumclaw High School, so teaching and helping students is something that we are both passionate about.

As I mentioned earlier, I really enjoy my work, and I truly believe that I have one of the best jobs in the world.  What could be more fun than helping students enjoy being physically active and develop an enjoyment of sports and games?  My strong belief in being physically fit is what drives my core beliefs in what I teach.

My
philosophies for teaching Physical Education are:

1.  P.E. should be fun!  If students don't enjoy coming to my class, how can I expect them to work hard, and want to develop their own skills and fitness levels?
2.  All students can see the benefits of living a physically active lifestyle.  By staying active, students can avoid potential life-long health problems such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and a variety of other very dangerous diseases and health issues .  I don't think that good health and the benefits of regular exercise are only available to pro athletes- those things are available to everyone who stays active!
3.  I assess student progress based on individual improvement, not on whether or not someone is the most highly skilled.  All I ask in my class is that you try hard, and give your best effort.  One thing that all of my students will focus on this year is setting realistic goals, and working towards reaching them.
