At
Terminal Park I get to know each of your students through large
group guidance lessons in their classroom, small counseling groups,
or in meeting with them individually. To meet the needs of
each grade level, different guidance units are taught throughout
the year, see below.
Kindergarten
1. Kelso's Choices-In the beginning of the
school year kindergarten students are taught that when they have a
"small" problem, they can use one of Kelso's 9 choices to solve
it. They learn that if they have a "large"
problem, one that
is dangerous or if someone is getting hurt, they tell an
adult
immediately. Kelso's choices are used throughout the school
year, and students earn Kelso badges for their good
choices.
2. Second Step-At Terminal Park we teach
an anti-bullying program called "Steps to Respect" to the 3rd, 4th,
and 5th grade students. In the primary grades we teach
"Second Step", a violence prevention program that integrates
academics with social and emotional learning. This curriculm
is divided into three units; Empathy Building, Impulse Control and
Problem Solving, and Anger Management. This curriculm is
taught throughout the school year.
3. Talk about
Touching-This curriculum is taught in the
Spring. This is a comprehensive personal safety program, I
teach children simple safety rules that guide them towards safe
decision making. This program covers safety topics such
as:
- Traffic safety
- Gun safety
- Safe touches and how to respond to an unsafe touch
- How to ask for help in uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous
situation
First Grade
1. Kelso's choices-In the beginning of
the school year each classroom gets a Kelso Refresher lesson.
Student's are encouraged throughout the school year to use Kelso's
choices if they have a small problem. They can earn a Kelso
badge if they are caught doing it.
2. Class Meetings-I facilitate class
meetings in some of their first grade classes. In class
meetings we work on giving compliments, apologizing, and solving
problems together as a class.
3. Second Step-See above for the
description. Gina Hamilton, our primary learning specialist,
teaches most of the second step lessons to the 1st and 2nd
graders. I help her teach some of the lessons throughout the
school year.
Second
Grade
1. Kelso's
choices-Second grade students also get a
Kelso refresher in the beginning of the school year.
Student's are encouraged throughout the school year to use Kelso's
choices if they have a small problem.
2. Class
Meetings-I facilitate class meetings also in
the second grade classrooms. In class meetings we work on
giving compliments, apologizing, and solving problems together as a
class.
3.Talk about
Touching-See the description under the
kindergarten section.
