READING
TOSA
(Teacher
On Special
Assignment)
The reading TOSA
position at Washington/Terminal Park Elementary is used to
reduce class size in the area of reading for grades
K-5.
We use the Walk to
Read model. Every
class within a grade level has reading at the same time and the
students are grouped according to ability. They receive 30-60 minutes of
targeted instruction on their reading level every day. We saw great success last year
and are looking forward to another successful
year.
In the TOSA room we
work on the five areas of reading that research has proven to be
most critical: Phonemic awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary,
and Comprehension. We
use a variety of programs and strategies to instruct in these five
areas for each grade level as appropriate.
Most of the children
I instruct are ones that tested below grade level on several
different tests. My
goal is to have each child reading on grade level or above as
soon as possible. The
children are moved within the groups as the need arises throughout
the year.
